21-Day Daniel Fast

Embarking on a new journey for the New Year!

OCC will be embarking on a new journey starting January 1, 2024. For 21 Days, we will be driving ourselves into the will of God. We desire to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit so that our lives are spiritually vibrant again. We also want to see fruit from our labors- souls coming to Christ, bodies healed, baptisms in the Holy Spirit, and missionaries sent. In the Christian life, there is room for feasting and fasting. Now is the time for fasting. Jesus, the bridegroom, said:

But the time will come when the bridegroom is from them; in those days, they will fast. Luke 5:35

How Do I Prepare?

Ask for God's help. The fast is unto Him and for His glory. Will He not help those who cry out to Him?

Purchase healthy fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains to eat during the fast. The Daniel Fast is a partial fast, so you do get to eat. There are tons of great recipes online.

What is the Daniel Fast?

The Daniel Fast is a biblical-based partial fast that lasts anywhere from 10 to 40 days. The goal of Daniel Fast is to help us draw closer to God and is meant as cleansing to enhance spiritual health by simplifying your diet.

The Daniel Fast can be found in the book of Daniel chapter 1:8-17


"But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods. Now God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection for Daniel. But he responded, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has ordered that you eat this food and wine. If you become pale and thin compared to the other youths your age, I am afraid the king will have me beheaded.”Daniel spoke with the attendant who had been appointed by the chief of staff to look after Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. “Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel said. “At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who are eating the king’s food. Then make your decision in light of what you see.” The attendant agreed to Daniel’s suggestion and tested them for ten days.

At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king.  So after that, the attendant fed them only vegetables instead of the food and wine provided for the others.

God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams."

What do you Eat on the Daniel Fast?

The Daniel Fast is a whole food plant-based diet, with no bread or sweetness. We see in Daniel 1:12 and Daniel 10:12-13 what the diet is defined to be.

“Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel said.“At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who are eating the king’s food. Then make your decision in light of what you see.” 

  • Eating only fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds

  • Avoiding “choice foods” such as meat, dairy, and sugars

  • Drinking only water.

Things you can eat on the Daniel fast are,

  • Vegetables: fresh, frozen, canned, or dried.

  • Fruits: fresh, frozen, canned, or dried.

  • Whole grains and legumes: brown rice, quinoa, corn, wild rice, bulgur wheat, farro, millet, oats, quinoa, popcorn, and all legumes including beans, lentils, peas, and chickpeas. Also includes whole-grain pasta and whole-grain tortillas.

  • Healthy liquid oils: olive, canola, corn, grapeseed, peanut, sunflower, safflower.

  • Nuts & seeds

Things you should not eat on the Daniel fast are,

  • Animal & dairy products: any meat, seafood, eggs, milk, and cheese.

  • Processed foods of any kind: crackers, chips, fries, fast food, anything with additives or preservatives, white flour, and white rice.

  • Leavened bread: anything including yeast, like sandwich bread, and artisan bread.

  • Sweeteners: sugar, stevia, maple syrup, and honey.

  • Drinks: coffee, tea, sweetened beverages, soda, and alcohol.
